I bought the WPCodeBox lifetime licence in June 2021. Five years later this is a review from an occasional user, not a power user. I used it now and then to add custom snippets, mostly JavaScript, and less and less as I stopped working on my WordPress sites as much. If you’re deciding whether it’s worth paying for a snippets plugin when you only need one occasionally, that is exactly my situation.

The two features I actually used
- Cloud snippets. You can upload a snippet to your WPCodeBox cloud account and then pull it onto another site. When I worked on several WordPress sites, this was the main reason I chose it over the free Code Snippets plugin: write a snippet once, reuse it everywhere. Snippets are saved locally by default, and you choose which ones go to the cloud.
- The on/off toggle. Every snippet can be switched off with one click. When something on a site breaks, turning a snippet off is faster and safer than editing
functions.phpover FTP.
If you only need one or two PHP snippets on a single site, the free Code Snippets plugin does the job. I wrote up how to use it in this guide to adding custom code safely. WPCodeBox earns its price when you look after more than one site, or when you add JavaScript and CSS as often as PHP. For me it is most useful for testing and adding snippets, especially the same snippet across different websites.
What has changed since 2021
The plugin is now WPCodeBox 2, and my 2021 lifetime licence covers it. It is still actively developed, with releases in September 2026. The headline addition is MCP access for AI clients (v1.4.0, September 8, 2026). An AI assistant such as Claude Desktop can list your snippets, and with an administrator’s opt-in it can also write and run them. Reads are allowed by default, while writes and execution have to be switched on explicitly. That’s the right default for a tool that can run PHP on a live site.
Pricing today
- Single site: $39 a year.
- Unlimited sites: $79 a year.
- Unlimited lifetime licence: $199 one-time, with lifetime updates and support.
- WPCodeBox + Cloud: $149 a year, the plugin plus unlimited cloud snippet storage.
The pricing page currently says prices will change soon, so the lifetime price may not last. All plans have a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Would I buy it again?
Yes. I like it, and the lifetime licence was worth it for me, even with my occasional use.
If you’re deciding for yourself, the question is how many sites you’ll be maintaining over the next few years. Cloud snippets were the reason I bought it, and they only matter once you have more than one site. For one site and occasional snippets, the free plugin is enough. For several sites, $79 a year covers them all, and the $199 lifetime licence costs the same as about two and a half years of that.
