How to Remove the Blogger Navbar (CSS That Still Works)

The Blogger navbar is the thin bar across the top of some Blogger blogs, with the Blogger logo, a search box and “Create Blog” and “Sign In” links. You can remove it with one CSS rule. If your blog uses one of Blogger’s newer themes, such as Contempo, Soho or Essential, there is nothing to remove: those themes don’t include the navbar.

Remove the navbar with CSS

In Blogger, click Theme in the left menu. Under “My theme”, click Customize, then Advanced, open the dropdown and choose Add CSS. Paste this rule and click Save:

You can also add it in the theme code: under “My theme”, click the arrow next to Customize, choose Edit HTML and paste the rule just above ]]></b:skin>. On an old classic template, put it inside the template’s <style> block.

Why the old #navbar-iframe code leaves a gap

Older tutorials, including the first version of this one, hide only #navbar-iframe. On the themes that still show the navbar (Simple, Watermark, Picture Window, Awesome Inc and others from that generation), the iframe sits inside a #navbar section that keeps its 30px height, so that code hides the bar but leaves an empty 30px band at the top of the page. Hiding #navbar as well removes the band. On classic templates the navbar iframe floats over the page, so the old rule still works there; the rule above covers both.

Turn the Navbar gadget off in Layout

On themes that have it, the navbar is a gadget at the top of the Layout page. Clicking Edit on it used to offer an Off option that removes it without code. Blogger Help no longer documents this option, so if you don’t see it, use the CSS above.
